“ISpectra Technologies brought deep expertise in cybersecurity and DevSecOps to our projects, playing a crucial role in our EDR Tool implementations and SOC 2 compliance. Their solutions were tailored to our business and their proactive approach improved both our agility and security posture. ISpectra felt more like an extension of our team than an external vendor.”
DPDP Certification in India Audit-Ready in 2-3 Months
ISpectra provides DPDP certification in India: an independent assessment that proves your organisation meets the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and the DPDP Rules, 2025. We map every personal record you hold, rebuild notices and consent, put rights and breach procedures in place, and test that each control works.
Delivery takes 2-3 months from kick-off, in every state and union territory. Most work runs remotely through a shared workspace, with on-site days in any Indian city where the engagement needs them. A written fixed-fee quote arrives within 48 hours of scoping.
Why DPDP Certification in India Matters Now
India now has a single national law for digital personal data. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 applies to every organisation that processes the digital personal data of people in India, whatever its sector or size, and to foreign organisations that offer goods or services to people in India. The DPDP Rules, 2025, notified by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in November 2025, turn the Act into operational duties that come into force in phases.
The law changes how buyers judge suppliers. Enterprise procurement teams, banks, insurers, global clients and government tender panels now ask the same question in security questionnaires: can you show, with evidence, that you handle personal data lawfully? A policy document no longer answers it. An independent DPDP compliance certification does.
The penalties raise the stakes further. The Data Protection Board of India can impose a penalty of up to 250 crore rupees for a failure to take reasonable security safeguards that leads to a personal data breach. Penalties of up to 200 crore rupees apply to failures in breach notification and in duties towards children's data. The Board weighs the nature, gravity and duration of each failure.
DPDP certification in India gives you that proof. ISpectra assesses your processing against every applicable section of the Act and every rule, closes the gaps with your teams, and issues an independent report that maps each obligation to tested evidence. You can share it with clients, auditors, investors and regulators.
What DPDP Certification in India Actually Means
Buyers search for a DPDP certificate, and some vendors sell one. Before you commit budget, it helps to know exactly what the law provides and what an independent assessment adds.
What the law provides
The DPDP Act and the DPDP Rules create no government certificate and no accreditation scheme for certification bodies. The only formal registration under the law is for Consent Managers, who register with the Data Protection Board. Training courses that award a "DPDP practitioner" credential certify a person, not your organisation.
What DPDP certification is
In the market, DPDP certification in India means an independent compliance assessment of your organisation against the Act and the Rules, followed by a written attestation of the result. It is the same model buyers already accept for SOC 2 reports and ISO audits: an outside party tests your controls and signs its findings.
What you receive from ISpectra
An independent DPDP assessment report that maps every applicable obligation to tested evidence, a statement of compliance status, a register of any open findings with owners and dates, and a plan for periodic review. ISpectra never presents its report as a government certificate.
Why buyers accept it
Procurement teams, enterprise clients and investors need evidence they can rely on, not a self-declaration. A report from an assessor independent of your delivery team answers DPDP questions in security questionnaires, due diligence and tender evaluations.
How it differs from the SDF data audit
A Significant Data Fiduciary must appoint an independent data auditor and complete an audit every year. ISpectra's assessment uses the same depth of testing, so a notified SDF starts its statutory audit with its evidence already in order.
DPDP Compliance in India: What the Act and Rules Require
DPDP compliance in India rests on a small set of defined roles and duties. Every organisation should first establish which role it plays for each data set.
Data Fiduciary
The organisation that decides why and how personal data is processed. It carries the full set of duties under the Act, including the duties for processing done on its behalf.
Data Processor
An organisation that processes personal data for a Data Fiduciary under a valid contract. Its obligations flow through that contract, and the fiduciary stays accountable for its work.
Significant Data Fiduciary
A fiduciary that the Central Government notifies on the basis of data volume, sensitivity, and risk to people's rights or to the State. It must appoint a Data Protection Officer based in India, appoint an independent data auditor, and carry out a Data Protection Impact Assessment and an audit every year.
Consent Manager
An entity registered with the Data Protection Board that lets people give, manage, review and withdraw consent across services through one interoperable platform.
Data Principal
The individual the data relates to. For a child under 18, or a person with a disability who has a lawful guardian, the parent or guardian acts on their behalf.
Processing is lawful on only two grounds: consent, or a legitimate use listed in Section 7 of the Act. Consent must be free, specific, informed, unconditional and unambiguous, given through a clear affirmative action, and limited to the data needed for the stated purpose. Every request for consent needs a notice that is clear and plain, and that can be read on its own. It must also be available in English or any language in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution. Withdrawing consent must be as easy as giving it.
Data Principals have the right to access a summary of their data and processing, to correct, complete, update and erase their data, to grievance redressal, and to nominate another person to act for them. Fiduciaries must publish how Data Principals can exercise these rights, answer each request within the period they publish, which may not exceed 90 days, and publish the contact details of the person who answers questions about processing.
The core duties for every Data Fiduciary are reasonable security safeguards, accuracy where data is used for decisions, erasure once the purpose is served, a working grievance mechanism, and notification of every personal data breach to the Data Protection Board and to each affected Data Principal. The Rules set out the content of those breach notices and require a detailed report to the Board within 72 hours of becoming aware of a breach.
Retention has its own mechanics. Where a Data Principal has not engaged with certain large platforms for the period the Rules set, the fiduciary must erase their data and give them at least 48 hours' notice before it does. Every fiduciary must also keep the logs of its processing for at least one year, to support breach investigations.
Children's data carries extra duties. A fiduciary must obtain verifiable consent from a parent before processing a child's data, and must not track, monitor behaviour or target advertising at children. The Rules list narrow exemptions, for example for healthcare, education and child safety.
DPDP Rules 2025: The Phased Timeline for DPDP Compliance in India
The DPDP Rules, 2025 do not apply all at once. They come into force in phases, and organisations that start early meet each phase without disruption.
November 2025: the institutions
The rules that set up the Data Protection Board of India took effect when the Rules were notified. The Board now exists to hear complaints, inquire into breaches and impose penalties once the duties apply.
November 2026: Consent Managers
Twelve months after notification, the rules on registering and running Consent Managers come into force. Organisations whose users may reach them through a Consent Manager should design their consent records to work with one.
May 2027: the full set of duties
Eighteen months after notification, notices, consent, security safeguards, breach notification, retention and erasure, rights handling, children's data, cross-border transfers and the extra duties for Significant Data Fiduciaries all apply. This is the phase every fiduciary must be ready for.
The Government can change these dates by notification, and ISpectra tracks every change for its clients. The transition period exists for engineering and process work, not for waiting. Data discovery, consent redesign and erasure automation take months in any organisation with more than a few systems. ISpectra schedules your programme so that each control is in place and tested before its phase begins.
DPDP Penalties: What Non-Compliance Costs in India
The Schedule to the DPDP Act sets a maximum penalty for each type of failure. The Data Protection Board of India decides the amount in each case after an inquiry, considering the nature, gravity and duration of the failure, the type of data affected, any gain or loss, and the steps taken to limit the harm.
Up to 250 crore rupees
Failure to take reasonable security safeguards to prevent a personal data breach.
Up to 200 crore rupees: breach notice
Failure to notify the Board and affected Data Principals of a personal data breach.
Up to 200 crore rupees: children's data
Failure to meet the additional duties for processing children's personal data.
Up to 150 crore rupees
Failure by a Significant Data Fiduciary to meet its additional obligations.
Up to 50 crore rupees
Breach of any other provision of the Act or the Rules.
Penalties apply per instance, and one incident can involve several failures. A tested set of safeguards, a rehearsed breach procedure and documented consent are the most direct way to reduce that exposure.

DPDP Audit in India: How We Test Your Controls
A DPDP audit in India by ISpectra tests what happens in your systems and offices, not just what your policies say. It covers every applicable section of the Act and every rule.
Data discovery comes first. We build a personal data inventory across applications, databases, data lakes, SaaS tools, endpoints, file shares, vendors and paper registers. We then map how each data set flows: where it is collected, where it is stored, who can reach it, where it is shared and when it is deleted.
Notices and consent come next. We walk through every collection point: web and app sign-up, cookie banners, forms, call-centre scripts, branch counters and onboarding packs. We check that each notice names the data and purpose and is available in the right language. We check that each consent is logged with its version and timestamp, and that withdrawal stops processing in every downstream system.
Each legitimate-use claim is tested on its own merits. Employment purposes, legal obligations, medical emergencies and voluntarily shared data can qualify under Section 7. Marketing, profiling and data monetisation do not.
Vendor and processor contracts are reviewed for DPDP clauses on purpose limits, security, breach reporting, sub-processing and erasure. We then sample processors to confirm practice matches the contract.
The security safeguards review covers access control, encryption, masking, logging, monitoring, backup and the retention of logs. A breach simulation tests your response: your team works through a staged incident and drafts the notices for the Data Protection Board and for affected Data Principals.
Rights handling is tested end to end. We raise test access, correction, erasure and grievance requests and measure how accurately and how quickly your teams respond. Erasure is traced through production systems, analytics copies, backups and vendor feeds.
The output is an independent DPDP audit report. It lists each obligation, the evidence tested, the result, and the status and owner of every finding. For Significant Data Fiduciaries we also support the Data Protection Impact Assessment and prepare you for the periodic audit by an independent data auditor.
DPDP Consulting in India: Five Steps to Certification
Our DPDP consulting in India follows a fixed five-step method. The full programme, from kick-off to independent assessment, takes 2-3 months.
Step 1: Scoping and Data Discovery (Weeks 1-2)
We meet product, engineering, legal, security, operations and people leads. Automated discovery scans databases, cloud storage and file shares for personal data, including copies no one listed. You receive a first data inventory, a role map showing where you act as fiduciary or processor, and an agreed scope of entities, systems and locations.
Step 2: Gap Assessment (Weeks 2-4)
Our consultants compare current practice with every applicable section of the Act and every rule. Each gap receives a severity rating, an owner and a target date. Engineering gaps go straight into your delivery backlog so that remediation starts early.
Step 3: Notices, Consent and Legitimate Uses (Weeks 4-7)
We draft notices in English and the scheduled languages your users read. Consent journeys are redesigned for web, mobile, assisted and offline channels, with a consent log that records purpose, version and timestamp. Legitimate uses are documented in a register. Age assurance and verifiable parental consent are added to any journey a child may use.
Step 4: Safeguards, Contracts, Retention, Rights and Breach Response (Weeks 6-10)
Access control, encryption, logging and monitoring are tightened with your engineers. Processor contracts receive DPDP clauses. A retention schedule sets erasure triggers for each data category, automated wherever possible. Rights and grievance workflows go live. A breach response plan aligns DPDP notification with CERT-In incident reporting, and role-based training covers engineers, support, operations and leadership.
Step 5: Independent Assessment and Continuous Compliance (Weeks 10-12)
An assessor independent of the delivery team tests every control. Each open item receives an owner and a closing date. You receive the DPDP certification report and a plan for periodic review. Between reviews, Secure Edge keeps a live record of every control and its evidence.
Industries We Prepare for DPDP Certification in India
Banking and Financial Services
Banks, NBFCs, lenders, brokers and insurers hold KYC, income, credit and claims data. We align DPDP duties with RBI, SEBI and IRDAI requirements and test data flows to collection agents, partners and outsourced service providers.
Fintech and Payments
Wallets, payment aggregators and digital lenders process transaction and device data at scale. We design consent and purpose limits into onboarding and test erasure across payment, risk and analytics systems.
Healthcare and Health Tech
Hospitals, diagnostic labs, pharmacies and telemedicine platforms hold highly sensitive health records. We test patient portals, report delivery, clinician access, retention and breach response.
E-Commerce and Consumer Apps
Marketplaces, delivery, travel, gaming and social apps hold profiles, locations and payment tokens for millions of users. We build consent, rights and erasure into product journeys and prepare large platforms for a possible Significant Data Fiduciary notification.
Education and EdTech
Schools, universities, coaching institutes and learning platforms serve many users under 18. We implement verifiable parental consent, remove behavioural tracking and targeted advertising for children, and clear out old admission records.
IT Services, SaaS and GCCs
Technology firms often act as Data Processors for clients in India and as fiduciaries for their own staff and users. We map both roles, draft processor terms and align DPDP controls with ISO 27001, SOC 2 and GDPR evidence.
Manufacturing, Logistics and Retail
Plants, warehouses and store networks keep large workforce, contract labour, CCTV, gate-pass and loyalty records, often partly on paper. We write notices in local languages, secure paper registers and set erasure dates for each record type.
Telecom, Media and BPO
Telecom operators, media platforms and contact centres process subscriber, viewer and customer data, often for many clients at once. We separate client data sets, control agent access and align contracts with each client's DPDP duties.
DPDP Compliance Services in India and Linked Frameworks
DPDP compliance services in India from ISpectra cover the full set of deliverables. You receive the data inventory and flow maps, notices and consent journeys with consent logs, the legitimate-use register, and processor contracts. You also receive the retention and erasure schedule, rights and grievance workflows, the breach response plan, training records and the independent assessment report. DPDP fits alongside the frameworks Indian organisations already run, so one control set can serve several audits.
ISO 27001
ISO 27001 already covers much of the security safeguards duty. Its access control, logging, supplier and incident controls give DPDP a strong foundation, and we reuse that evidence rather than rebuilding it.
ISO 27701
ISO 27701 extends ISO 27001 into a privacy information management system. It maps closely to DPDP notices, consent, rights and processor duties, and suits organisations that also serve users outside India.
GDPR
GDPR shares DPDP's principles of purpose limitation, data minimisation and data subject rights. Organisations serving Europe can run one privacy programme and keep the differences, such as DPDP's narrower lawful grounds and stricter children's rules, in a short delta register.
SOC 2
SOC 2 privacy and confidentiality criteria overlap with DPDP security, retention and disposal duties. SaaS firms that sell to global enterprises can present both reports from one evidence set.
CERT-In
CERT-In directions require many incidents to be reported within 6 hours. We merge CERT-In reporting with DPDP breach notification into one incident procedure, so your team follows a single playbook.
RBI
RBI, SEBI and IRDAI rules govern data handling, outsourcing and cyber security in regulated finance. We map each sectoral rule to the matching DPDP control, so regulated entities answer both with the same evidence.

DPDP Certification in India: Your Questions Answered
DPDP certification in India is an independent assessment that confirms an organisation complies with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and the DPDP Rules, 2025. The assessor tests notices, consent, rights handling, security safeguards, breach response, retention and processor contracts, then issues a report that maps each obligation to evidence.
No. The Government of India does not issue a DPDP certificate, and the Act has no accreditation scheme for certification bodies. DPDP certification is the market term for an independent compliance assessment. Clients, investors and tender panels accept the assessment report as evidence of compliance.
DPDP compliance is mandatory for every organisation that processes digital personal data in India. Certification itself is not required by law, but it is the most direct way to prove compliance to clients, investors and the Data Protection Board. Significant Data Fiduciaries must, in addition, complete an independent data audit every year.
DPDP compliance in India applies to every organisation that processes digital personal data in India, and to organisations outside India that process data in connection with offering goods or services to people in India. It applies to companies, partnerships, trusts, societies and government bodies alike. Personal data collected on paper and later digitised is covered too.
DPDP certification in India with ISpectra takes 2-3 months from kick-off to independent assessment. The timeline covers data discovery, gap assessment, remediation of notices, consent, safeguards, contracts and rights workflows, and the final audit.
The cost of DPDP certification in India depends on the volume and sensitivity of your data, your role as fiduciary or processor, and the number of systems, vendors and locations in scope. ISpectra sends a written fixed-fee quote within 48 hours of scoping, so the price is fixed before work starts.
The DPDP Act allows penalties of up to 250 crore rupees for failing to take reasonable security safeguards that leads to a personal data breach. Failures in breach notification and in duties towards children's data can attract up to 200 crore rupees. The Data Protection Board of India sets each penalty based on the nature, gravity and duration of the failure.
The DPDP Rules, 2025 were notified in November 2025 and come into force in phases. The provisions that set up the Data Protection Board took effect first. Consent Manager registration follows in November 2026, and the full set of duties for Data Fiduciaries applies from May 2027. Starting now leaves time to discover data and rebuild consent before the duties apply.
Yes. The DPDP Act applies to organisations outside India when they process digital personal data in connection with offering goods or services to people in India. A foreign SaaS provider, marketplace or service company with Indian users must meet the same duties as an Indian fiduciary.
A Data Protection Officer based in India is mandatory only for Significant Data Fiduciaries. Every other Data Fiduciary must publish the contact details of a person who can answer questions about its processing. Many organisations appoint a privacy lead for this role, and we define its responsibilities as part of the programme.
A Significant Data Fiduciary is a Data Fiduciary that the Central Government notifies based on the volume and sensitivity of the data it processes and the risk to people's rights. It must appoint a Data Protection Officer based in India and an independent data auditor, and carry out a Data Protection Impact Assessment and an independent data audit every year.
A Consent Manager is an entity registered with the Data Protection Board of India that lets Data Principals give, manage, review and withdraw consent through one accessible, interoperable platform. Registration of Consent Managers starts in November 2026. Data Fiduciaries should design consent records that can accept consent through a Consent Manager.
Under DPDP, a Data Fiduciary must inform the Data Protection Board of India and every affected Data Principal of a personal data breach without delay. The Rules require a detailed report to the Board within 72 hours of becoming aware of the breach. Many incidents must also be reported to CERT-In within 6 hours, and we build both into one procedure.
DPDP and GDPR share core principles, but DPDP allows only two lawful grounds, consent and listed legitimate uses, where GDPR has six. DPDP treats everyone under 18 as a child and bars tracking and targeted advertising aimed at children. It also introduces registered Consent Managers. GDPR evidence still covers much of the DPDP work, and we map the overlap.
ISO 27001 covers much of the security safeguards duty under DPDP, but not the privacy duties. Notices, consent, legitimate uses, rights handling, children's data and erasure need separate controls. ISO 27701 closes more of that gap. ISpectra reuses your ISO evidence and adds only the DPDP controls you are missing.
